Spanky and "The Little Rascals"

The Little Rascals

I watched "Spanky and The Little Rascals" as re-runs on TV when I was a kid. Then I introduced them to my own kids. We watched these old 1933 videos of Spanky and The Little Rascals. We have also enjoyed the 1994 movie, The Little Rascals, based on these original shorts.

Here's the cast in the photo above (left to right)
Harold Switzer, Scotty Beckett, Darla (Darla Hood), Baby Patsy, Spanky (George MacFarland) Buckwheat (Billie Thomas), Alfalfa (Carl Switzer), Pete the Dog. Others in the series: Stymie (Matthew Stymie Beard), Dickie (Dickie DeNuet), Waldo (Darwood Kaye), , Jackie (Jackie Cooper), Tommy/Butch (Tommy Bond)

The Little Rascals

The Little Rascals had their beginning with Hal Roach (what a name) in 1922, at his studios. At first they were a series of silent films. Sound was introduced in 1929. Hal Roach sold "The Little Rascals" to MGM in 1938. They continued to produce them under the name of "Our Gang" until 1944. The original "Little Rascals" were syndicated for television in the 1950's, making them very popular, and these were the ones I saw as kid.

I'm pretty sure my hubby was raised in the gang with little or no parental intervention, at all.  He ran around like a rag-a-muffin with his sisters and dog, Friskie.

Here is one of my favorite scenes, "Oh it's Saturday, it's Saturday...." Yea, baby, it's Saturday. No school. "hi-nigh-nighny and a hachaha":
Here's Buckwheat:
And Spanky answers the phone:
And when Stymie gives him twist:
